Intermittent Pneumatic Compression Flashcards
1
Q
Definition
A
- application of intermittent external compressive forces, generated by pneumatic compressor units
- pump air to compress veins and arteries
2
Q
Equipment
A
- Sleeve connected to a pump
- Amount of pressure and time is usually adjustable
3
Q
Therapeutic Effects
A
- Reduction of Edema
- Decrease Pain
- Increases ROM
4
Q
Indications
A
- Lymphedema
- Posttraumatic lower limb edema
- Prevent DVT in patients undergoing lower limb surgery
5

A
- Heart failure or pulmonary edema
- CHF
- Recent or acute DVT
- Obstructed lymphatic or venous return
- Severe arterial insufficiency or PAD
- Acute fractures
- Infections at treatment site
6
Q
Precautions
A
- Impaired sensation
- Impaired mentation
- Uncontrolled HTN
- Cancer
- Stroke
- Superficial peripheral nerves
7
Q
Dosage
A
- Take BP, never exceed diastolic BP
- Inflation / deflation ratio of 3:1
- Apply pressure for 80-100 sec & release for 25- 30 sec
- Minimal duration = 2 -3 hours a day, usually once or twice per day
- Maximum edema reduction in 3-4 weeks
- Frequency can range from 3 to 4 times a day
8
Q
Inflation Pressures
A
- UE: 30 - 60 mm Hg
- LE: 40-80 mm Hg
9
Q
Treatment Procedures
A
- Experience sense of pressure, but no pain, tingling or numbness should be felt
10
Q
Adverse Effects of External Compression
A
- Impairment of circulation with excessive pressure
- Impaired healing
- Tissue death
