Interferential Current (IFC) Flashcards
1
Q
Beat frequency
A
f2- f1
2
Q
Premodulated IFC
A
- two medium frequency currents are interfered within the IFC machine
- don’t need to crisscross two channels of electrodes
3
Q
Prime physiological effect
A
- Depolarizes peripheral sensory and motor nerve fibers
4
Q
Main therapeutic effects
A
- management of pain
- management of urinary incontinence
- management of muscle weakness
5
Q
Stimulator types and electrodes
A
- can have line powered / portable with self adhesive or suction cup electrodes
6
Q
Electrode placement
A
- over the treatment area or within the targeted tissues
7
Q
Parameters for pain Modulation
A
- follow TENS
- Beat frequency: range of 1 to 200 beats per seconds
- Amplitude depends on the desired level of sensory or motor nerve stimulation
8
Q
parameters for Evoking muscle Contraction
A
- Follow NMES
- Beat frequency: 50 beats per second
- 2 large electrodes for Premodulated IFC
- 4 smaller electrodes for IFC
9
Q
Considerations
A
- adverse effects such as fainting, nausea, burns (monitor IFC more)
- avoid high current density (small electrodes with high amplitude current)
10
Q
Suction cup electrodes should be avoided
A
- Sponges and suction cup can be contaminated with microorganisms
- Negative pressure may bruise skin
