Why were intermediate sanctions created?
Prison overcrowding problem but probation not harsh enough of punishment
What are sanctions on the low end of the continuum?
Fines, restitution, forfeiture of property obtained illegally
What are examples of community ISs?
House arrest, community service, drug court, day reporting centers, intensive supervision
What is the most underused IS in the country?
Community service
What is drug court?
Judicially supervised substance abuse treatment
What are problems with intensive supervision?
High risk of recidivism (technical violations); expensive
What are examples of institutional ISs?
Residential Community Corrections, periodic jail confinement, boot camp
What is a residential community center?
Offender is free to leave for work, appt.; must return by curfew
What does boot camp emphasize?
Teamwork; discipline; physical fitness
What is the least effective IS?
Boot camp
What are two criticisms of IS?
Net widening (increases in sanctions); increased prison population (more technical violations to break)
