Interference Theory Flashcards

1
Q

What is interference?

A

(An explanation of forgetting) in terms of one memory disrupting the ability to recall another. This most likely to occur when the two memories have similarity

Q

Muller and Pilzecker (1900) ?

A

The gave ppnts non-syllables to remember for 6 minutes

One condition had a retention period where there was not disturbed and allowed to remember that information

another condition was made during the retention period to describe 3 landscape painting before the recall.

condition that was asked to describe painting did worse on the non-syllable recall

The intervening task (Pictures describing) produced the RI which later interfered with what they had previously learnt.

Q

underwood (1957)

A

He gave ppts a list of words to remember and tested them 24 hours after. The ppts did significantly worse than he expected; he concluded that the ppts had past experience with experiments that interfered with their ability to perform
