interference Flashcards
inteference theory
it suggests we forget because our long term memories become confused by other information
Proactive inteference
Old information affects new
retro-active interference
New information affects old
time sensitivity
interference is less likely to occur when there is a large gap between the instances of learning
Schmidt et al (2000)
- investigated retroactive interference using the memory of childhood street names
- PPTS were sent a questionnaire containing the map of the area around their old school without street names
- the more times an individual moved home, the fewer streets they recalled
- this suggests retro active interference as the process of remembering new streets interferes with the remembrance of old streets.
cue dependent forgetting
forgetting happens due to absence of appropriate cues encoded at the same time
context-dependent cues
cues from the external environment. Sights, sounds and smells triggers new memories
state dependent cues
cues from our internal environment. emotions, drugs, and state of arousal trigger memories
category dependent cues
Cues that are linked with the memory, trigger the memory
