intereference , young double slit Flashcards
What is the equation for young double slit experiment
and meaning of the letters
λ = sX/D
λ is wavelength
D is the distance between slit and the screen
s is the slit separation
x is fringe separatiaion
How to carry out young double slit experiment
Use a monochoromatic light source, and the light waves will reach the single slit and be diffracted to be in phase. Then light waves will reach the double slits where they will be diffracted at both slits. They are coherent at double slit as they come from same monochromatic light source. And use slits of similar gap to the wavelength
After passing through, the diffracted waves overlap and interfere.
in places of constructive interference there is bright fringes
places of destructive interference there is dark fringes
out of phase = no light
in phase = light
what does monochromatic light waves mean
light waves with same wavelength
What does the principle of superposition state
When two or more waves of the same type meet, the resultant wave can be found by adding the displacements of the individual waves.
define coherence
two waves with a constant phase relationship
what does path difference mean
what does phase difference mean
difference between the distances travelled by two waves arriving at the same point.
phase diff is the difference in the phases of two waves of same frequency.
What does a path difference of half a wavelength result in how much phase difference
PIE RADIANS X 1
what type of number of wavelengths is the path difference of constructive interference
and destructive interference
whole number of wavelengths
odd nr of wavelengths
Whats the phase difference intervals of contrsuctive interference and destructive interference in degrees
contrustive - 0,360,720
destrucive - 180,540, 900 +360
can you apply young double slit equation to non coherent waves
yes
