What is Interactionism?
Social action approach that argues that individuals are lead by free will rather than being subject to social forces
What did Meade suggest?
Individuals understand the concept o the ‘self’ through interactions with other people
Taking the role of the other - people play other roles to understand people’s reactions
What does Goffman argue?
Dramaturgical model -
individuals are social actors and take on different roles depending on the situation
impression management - adapting to give off impressions
What does Becker say?
‘looking glass self’ - people develop concepts of the self thought how other people perceive them
labels are internalised and people see themselves n terms of how other people ee them - self fulfilling prophecy

deterministic
ignores some of the wider social occourances that may shape behaviours
