Intensive Farming Flashcards
What is intensive farming used for?
Produce more food
As much food as possible from land, animals and plants
Farmers use herbicides for intensive farming. How does that help?
It kills weeds
Means more energy from sun going to useful crops and not any unnecessary ones
Farmers use pesticides for intensive farming. How does that help?
It kills insects that eat crops
More crops
Keeps the food chain the same
Farmers “battery farm” animals. How does that help?
Keeps animals close together (indoors).
They’re warm and waste less energy moving around (as they can’t because is it crowded)
Stops them using energy, and keep them warm.
What is hydroponic?
Plants being grown without soil
Grown in a “nutrient solution”
Water and fertilisers
Instead of soil
For which food is hydroponic mainly used for?
Glasshouse tomatoes
What are the advantages for hydroponic?
Minerals levels controlled more accurately
Diseases can be controlled effectively
What are the disadvantages of hydroponic?
Lots of fertilisers needed
No soil to support plant or roots
Destroy environment
How can intensive farming destroy the environment?
Pollution
Removing edges and making fields - destroys natural habitat and wildlife
Fertilisers pollute river & lake
(Eutrophication)
Pesticides disturb food chain
People believe that animal intensive farming (chickens) is cruel - do not have freedom
