Tangible creations such as:

What does copyright protect?
Music, illustrations, sound, software, databases, photos, broadcasts,dramatic works
What can design rights prevent?
Copying design, although it only protects the shape/configuration
What forms of protection do you have to apply for?
- Patents
- Registered designs
- Trademarks
What does copyright prevent?
- Copying & distributing work
- Renting, lending & adapting work
- Performing, playing & showing work in public/internet
What do patents protect?
Inventions (something that can be made or used)
How long does a protection of a patent last?
Usually 20 years but can be granted more depending on how long administration takes
What do registered designs protect and how long does this last?
Protects the appearance of a product as well as the shape/configuration
Can last 25 years in total but must be renewed every 5 years
How long does copyright protection last? And what proof is needed?
At least 50 years/at least 25 years for photos
Work must be signed and dated as well as © labelled
Can you transfer the licence of rights with design rights?
Yes, by selling or giving
What does a trademark protect and prevent?
Protects part of a brand, company or service
Prevents anyone using the brand without permission
How long does design right protection last?
15 years after creation and 10 years after it was sold
How long does trademark protection last?
10 years
