Coatings And Finishes Flashcards
What can metal finishing do?
- Reduce surface roughness for seals/joins
- Descalimg, recurring and cleaning
- Enhance electrical conductivity
- Can enhance resistance to electrical and chemical tarnish
What are the strengths of zinc plating?
Improves reaistance to corrosion and improved durability. Also improves appearance
What is a cheap coating to prevent corrosion?
Water and oil based paints
What is powder coating?
UV or heat during a polymer powder. Used to create a Matt or glossy finish
What is enemaling?
A thin layer of finely ground glass on metal which is heated to fuse it to the metal
What is the purpose of a surface finishing?
- Preservation and protection - protection against corrosion, fading, oxidizing or decaying.
- Improve aesthetics - colour, shape, texture, reflectivity, roughness, logos/branding
What are the purposes of coatings for natural timbers?
- Decorative reasons
2. Prevent weathering, UV degradation and moisture (damp)
What could effect the suitability of surface treatments for natural timbers?
- Knots could look attractive with a clear coating but could be uneven with a wood stain
- Oak is prone to splitting therefore it will need regular coats and maintenance
What are some problems when finishing manufactured boards?
They need to be sealed before finishing as they are absorbent.
A veneer will usually be used to finish instead of a coating
Only suitable for indoor use
