Integumentary system Flashcards
What is integument?
Skin - an organ within the integumentary system
What is the integumentary system?
skin + accessory organs (e.g. nails, hair, glands and sensory receptors)
What are the 5 functions of the integumentary system?
- Protection
- Regulate body temperature
- House sensory receptors
- Synthesize Vitamin D
- Excrete waste materials (perspiration)
What is the most superficial layer of skin?
epidermis
Of what is epidermis composed?
keratinized stratified squamous epithelium
What are the 4 cell types of keratinized stratified squamous epithelium?
- Keratinocytes
- Melanocytes
- Dendritic cells
- Merkel cells/discs
What is the predominate cell of keratinized stratified squamous epithelium? What does it do?
Keratinocytes
manufacture keratin
What is keratin? What does it do?
structural protein, toughens and waterproofs surface of epidermis
What is the role of melanocytes?
manufacture melanin (brown pigment)
What does melanin do?
Helps to absorb UV radiation
What are dendritic cells? What are 2 other names for dendritic cells?
immune cells
Langerhans cells, histocytes
What are Merkel cells/discs?
Type I tactile mechanoreceptors
What do Merkel cells/discs do?
discriminate touch
In what ways can the integumentary system regulate body heat? (4)
- Radiation (heat from subcutaneous blood vessels)
2-3. Convection and Conduction ( heat through skin) - Evaporation (perspiration on skin surface)
