Integumentary system Flashcards
What cells are within the epidermis?
Keratinocytes melanocytes, langerhans cells and Merkel cells
What is the process in which cells move up, they change shape and chemical composition because they lose most of their water and die. The cells become filled with keratin, a protein material.
Keratinization
In order, what is the five layers from outermost to deep?
Stratum Corneum(horny,leathery),
Stratum lucidum (clear layer),
Stratum granulosum,
Stratum spinosum (spiny or prickly layer)
Stratum basale( germinativum, rejuvenative layer)
Which skin layer consist of dead cells converted to protein?
Stratum corneum
Within the stratum corneum what covers and surrounds the cells to prevent any passage of fluid through this layer?
Lipids
Is there much water within corneum layer?
No, the cells within the layer are dehydrated and dead
Which layer in the epidermis is one or two cell layers thick. It is also transparent and flat.
The stratum lucidum
Describe The granulosum layer
This layer is also a flattened cells, and is very active in keratinization? The cells lose their nucleus and become compact and brittle.
This layer has several prickly shaped cells that are polyhedral in structure. Desmosome are still quite active
Stratum Spinosum layer
Describe the Stratham basale layer
Cells of the epidermis are capable of dividing by mitosis
Epidermis can only rejuvenate itself if this layer is intact
New cells are formed they go under Morphologic and nuclear changes as they get pushed upward by dividing cells underneath them
This layer contains melanocytes
Stratum basale layer
What are the three layers of the dermis?
The papillary
