Integumentary system Flashcards
What are the 5 roles of the integumentary system
- Shield/barrier to the external environment - physical barrier as skin
- Protects against disease and infection - Langerhans cells which digest and break down bacteria
- Regulates body temperature - sweat which when evaporates reduces body temperature
- Touch/sensitivity - Keratinocytes stimulate Merkel cells which generate action potential in local neurones
- Retention of body fluids
How does the integumentary system regulate body temperature (3)
- When the body temperature rises the sweat gland in the skin produce sweat which, in the process of evaporation on the skin, reduces body temperature.
- When the body temperature falls – sweat glands constrict, and sweat production decreases.
- The integumentary system also stores water to prevent dehydration.
How does the skin protect the internal organs (2)
- Skin acts as a physical barrier to bacteria protecting the internal organs.
- there is also an active population of immune cells present in the skin that act like macrophages to digest and break down bacteria called Langerhans cells. These are activated during the wound healing process and microbial and viral “invasion”. They are our first responders.
How does the skin facilitate the sense of touch? (2)
- keratinocytes in the epidermis when deformed, stimulate Merkel cells
- Merkel cells secrete chemicals that generate an action potential in local neurones.
How does the skin excrete products (2)
Sweat glands eliminate waste by secreting excess water, salts and urea.
What are the three major skin layers?
- Epidermis
- Dermis
- Subcutaneous adipose layer
What are the four layers of the epidermis, and what cells do they contain (4)?
- cornified cell layer - enucleated keratin cells called corneocytes, specialised cells preventing water loss
- Granular layer - cells containing granules of melanin and other protective products, melanocytes, keratinocytes
- Squamous epithelial layer - flat and irregularly organised epithelial cells
- Basal cell layer layer - regular-sized and shaped epithelial cells
What cells does the epidermis contain (6)
- epithelial cells
- Melanocytes
- Keratinocytes
- Corneocytes
- Merkel cells
- Langerhans cells
What is the dermis, and what does it contain (6)
A vascular layer of the skin containing fibrous, filamentous and amorphous connective tissue. It is made up of 2 layers: the papillary and the reticular layers.
- 15 types of collagen
- papillary dermis - loosely arranged collagen fibres
- papillae that extend to the epidermis containing capillaries and corpuscles
- Reticular dermis - dense connective tissue, collagen and elastic fibres,
- Dermal fibroblasts - production of fibrillin, elastin and collagen generates connective tissue.
What does the subcutaneous layer contain
adipocytes - thermoregulation & control hormones
