Anatomy and physiology consolidation Flashcards
What is the main function of the integumentary system
To cover and protect the other anatomical structures
What allows complex movements
Hundreds of muscles attached to bones by tendons
What protects the soft internal organs
Flat bones of the sternum and ribcage
What protects the brain
Flat bones in the skull
What do the long bones of the lower limbs host
The long bones of the lower limbs host most of the bone marrow in the body which is vitally important for the production of blood cells.
What is found in the cranial cavity
The brain
What is found in the spinal cavity (2)
- The spinal cord
- Responsible for the sensation in all the limbs and more
What is found in the thoracic cavity (2)
- Above the diaphragm but under the thoracic cage are the organs of the cardiovascular and respiratory system.
- The heart and lungs can be seen in context of the airways and oesophagus (the beginning of the digestive tract.
What is found in the abdominal cavity
Below, the diaphragm hosts many organs of the digestive tract, as well as the liver and kidneys
What is found in the pelvic cavity (2)
- Links to the abdominal cavity and is protected by the pelvic bones
- Contains the uterus and other reproductive organs
