Integumentary system Flashcards
1
Q
What are the components of the integumentary system (5)
A
- Skin
- Hair
- Nails
- Some Nerves
- Some Glands
2
Q
What are the functions of the integumentary system (5)
A
- Shield/barrier to the external environment
- Protects against disease and infection
- Regulates body temperature
- Touch/sensitivity
- Retention of body fluids
3
Q
How does the skin protect against disease and infection/barrier (3)
A
- Skin acts as a physical barrier to bacteria protecting the internal organs (epithelial layer)
- immune cells that act like macrophages called Langerhans cells.
- Langerhans are activated during the wound healing process, and microbial and viral “invasion”
4
Q
How is the integumentary system fundamental to our sense of touch (4)
A
- Merkel cells - Specialist cells
- found in digits, lips, oral cavity and hair follicles
- Keratinocytes when deformed stimulate Merkel cells
- Merkel cells secrete chemicals that generate an action potential in local neurons.
5
Q
What are the layers of the skin (3)
A
- Epidermis
- Dermis
- Subcutaneous adipose layer
6
Q
What layers does the epidermis contain (4)
A
- Granular layer - melanin & protective products
- Basal layer - regular shape column-like cells attached to the basement membrane
- Cornified cell layer - filled with keratin, no nucleus, prevent water movement
- Squamous epithelial tissue - flat irregular cells
7
Q
What cells does the epidermis contain (6)
A
- epithelial cells
- Melanocytes
- Keratinocytes
- Corneocytes
- Merkel cells
- Langerhans cells
8
Q
What is the dermis (3)
A
- A vascular layer of the skin
- contains fibrous, filamentous and amorphous connective tissue.
- Made up of 2 layers: the papillary and the reticular layers.
9
Q
What does the dermis contain (5)
A
- 15 types of collagen
- papillary dermis - loosely arranged collagen fibres
- papillae that extend to the epidermis containing capillaries and corpuscles
- Reticular dermis - dense connective tissue, collagen and elastic fibres,
- Dermal fibroblasts - production of fibrillin, elastin and collagen generates connective tissue.
10
Q
What does the subcutaneous layer contain
A
adipocytes - thermoregulation & control hormones
