Integumentary System Flashcards
Describe the integumentary system, what does it consist of?
Hair, folicies, nails, sweat and sebaceous glands
What are the functions of the integumentary system?
Protection
-Physical
-Chemical
-Biological
Thermoregulation
Excretion
Cutaneous sensation
Vitamin D synthesis
Blood reservoir
What are the main layers of the skin?
Dermis
Epidermis
Describe the epidermis layer of the skin
Thinner, avascular superficial portion of the skin
Describe the dermis layer of the skin
Deeper, thicker, has many blood vessels
Dense irregular CT
CONSISTS OF 2 layers reticular layers and papillary layer
What is the hypodermis
It’s not a layer of skin, lies deep to the dermis
Made up of areolar and adipose tissues
Anchors skin to underlying organs
Contains major blood vessels
Shock absorber + insulates the deeper body tissues
Describe the reticular layer of the dermis
Deeper and thicker
Lines of cleavage- formed by separations between collagen bundles
Tearing of fibers can create stretch marks
Describe the papillary layer of the dermis
Thin, superficial
Marked with projections called dermal papillae
Anchor cells to the basement
Describe a pressure injury
Pressure wound or ulcer from restricted blood flow to the tissue
May occur to layers of skin that are super to bones
Ex: ankles, elbows, heels, shoulders, hips
