Integumentary System Flashcards
Serous Membrane
Lines body cavities without openings
Secretes watery serous fluid
What is serous membrane made of?
A layer of simple squamous and loose connective tissue
Where is serous membrane located
thorax, abdomen
Mucous Membrane
Lines cavities WITH openings
Goblet cells secrete mucus
What is mucous membrane made of?
Epithelium over loose connective tissue
Where is mucous membrane located?
cavities… oral, nasal, tubes of digestive, respiratory, urinary, and reproductive system
Synovial Membrane
Inner lining of joint cavities
Secretes synovial fluids for lubrication
What is synovial membrane made of?
Dense connective tissue over loose connective and adipose tissue
Where is synovial membrane located
synovial joints: knee, elbow, hip
Cutaneous Membrane
homeostasis, protection, regulation of temp, hinder water loss, houses sensory receptors, synthesizes and excretes
Where is cutaneous membrane located
skin
2 distinct layers of skin
Epidermis and Dermis (with underlying subcutaneous)
Epidermis
prevents water loss, mechanical injury, effects of harmful chemicals, and keeps out disease
What does epidermis lack?
blood vessels
What is epidermis composed of?
stratified squamous epithelium
What is Stratum Basale
the deepest layer of epidermis
5 Layers of Epidermis
Basale, Spinosum, Granulosum, Lucidum, and Corneum
BSGLC
Stratum Corneum
outermost layer
Stratum Lucidum
found only in thick areas (palms and soles)
Stratum Granulosum
may be missing where epidermis is thin
stratum spinosum
between granulosum and basale
stratum basale
next to basement membrane
Where does cell division increase?
In areas where skin is rubbed causing growths called calluses or corns
Melanin
produced by melanocytes
absorb uv radiation and prevent mutations in dna skin cells
Does everyone have the same number of melanocytes?
Yes
Big Stinky Gorillas Like Corn
Basale, Spinosum, Granulosum, Lucidum, Corneum
What are the types of fingerprints
Arch, Loop, Whorl
