Integumentary System Flashcards
Skin, Hair, Nails, and Exocrine glands
Integumentary System Main Organs
Defense or immunity against harmful influences
Protection
Relating to sensation or the physical senses; transmitted or perceived by the senses
Sensory
Ability of an organism to keep its body temperature within certain boundaries
Thermoregulation
Epidermal layer of human skin synthesizes vitamin D when exposed to UV radiation
Vitamin D Synthesis
The thin layer of tissue forming the natural outer covering of the body of a person or animal
Skin
The surface epithelium of the skin, overlying the dermis
Epidermis
The inner layer of the two main layers of the skin
Dermis
The tissue immediately beneath the epidermis of a plant especially when modified to serve as a supporting and protecting layer
Hypodermis
A fibrous protein forming the main structural constituent of hair, feathers, hoofs, claws, horns, etc
Keratin
An epidermal cell which produces keratin
Keratinocyte
The basal layer of the epidermis consisting of a single row of columnar or cuboidal epithelial cells that continually divide and replace the rest of the epidermis as it wears away
Stratum basale
The layers of prickle cells over the layer of the stratum basale capable of undergoing mitosis
Stratum spinosum
A layer of granular nondividing cells lying immediately above the stratum basale in most parts of the epidermis
Stratum granulosum
A thin somewhat translucent layer of cells lying superficial to the stratum granulosum
Stratum lucidum
The stratum corneum refers to the outermost layer of the epidermis, which is itself the outer layer of the skin
Stratum corneum
Superficial is a directional term that indicates one structure is located more externally than another, or closer to the surface of the body
From superficial to deep (List the 5 layers of epidermis)
Thick skin is thicker due to it containing an extra layer in the epidermis
Thick Skin
Thin skin is the type that is found covering most parts of the body excluding certain parts of the hands and feet
Thin Skin
Hair, in mammals, the characteristic threadlike outgrowths of the outer layer of the skin (epidermis) that form an animal’s coat, or pelage
Hair
A shaft or opening on the surface of the skin through which hair grows
Hair Follicle
The part of a hair projecting beyond the surface of the skin
Hair Shaft
The part of a hair that is embedded in the hair follicle, its lower succulent extremity capping the dermal papilla pili in the deep bulbous portion of the follicle
Hair Root
The free edge of the nail is the white portion of the nail that grows out from the finger or toe and consists dead cells and keratin
Free Edge (nail)
Is the visible portion of the distal nail matrix that extends beyond the proximal nailfold
Lunula
The thickened layer of skin at the base of the fingernails and toenails
Eponychium (cuticle)
The root of the nail is also known as the germinal matrix
Nail Root
A tiny opening, especially opening in the skin through which sweat or sebaceous secretion (SEBUM) pass to the surface
Pores
A type of gland that is found in the skin, breast, eyelid, and ear
Apocrine Sweat Glands
A type of simple sweat gland that is found in almost all regions of the skin
Eccrine Sweat Glands
