Integument Skin 11/16/12 Flashcards
what is the Epidermis derived from?
Ectoderm
What is the Dermis derived fro?
Mesoderm
What are the two layers of the skin
Epidermis and Dermis
What is hypodermis
not part of the skin.
It consists of subcutaneous CT and fat, reprsenting the superficial fascia that covers the entire body
How is skin classificed as Thick or Thin?
Based on the thickness of the EPIDERMIS
What are the key features of Thick Skin
Occurs on palms and soles
5 distinct layers of keatinocytes, wich an esp. thick stratum corenum
Has ECCRINE sweat glands
Lacks hair follicles, sebaceous glands, arrector pili muscles
What are key features of Thin Skin
Occurs everywhere on teh body except palsm and soles
4 layers of kertainocytes (NO Stratum Lucideum, thisn stratum corneum)
Has Eccrine sweat glands
Has hair follicles, sebaciuose glands, arrector pili muscles
What are the 4 cell types of the EPIDERMIS
- Keratinocytes- main compononets of epideermis, arranged in 5 layers perpetaully being generated
Melanocytes- produce melanin, imparting borwn skin color
Merkel Cells- mechanoreceptor function
Langerhans cell- immune function
What are the five layers of the Epidermis? (from superficial to deep)
Stratutum Corneum Stratum Lucidum Stratum Granulosum Stratum Spinosum Stratum Basale
What is the thickest layer of epidermis?
Stratum Spinosum
How are Sttratum Spinosum arranged
cells have cytoplasmic spines, and are attached to one another via DESMOSOMES, giving them a “prickly” appearance in the histological preparation
Example of Serous Inflammation
inflammation of membrnae so flayrnx and epglottis
can cause asphyxia
ie Seromucous Inlcammation
Acute Rhinitis (common cold)
body response with inflammation and Exudation
Inflammation irritates epithelium, whcih undergoes HYPeRPLASIA to produce many mucus-dproducing cells (runny nose)
