Stratum basale
This is the deepest layer. Contains stem cells, Merkel cells, and pigment melanocytes
Stratum spinosum
Second deepest. Consists mostly of keratinocytes held together by desmosomes but also contains dendritic cells
Stratum granulosum
Third deepest. Contains keratohyalin granules
Stratum lucidum
Only observed in thick skin
Stratum corneum
Most superficial
Dermis
Made up of the papillary layer and the reticular layer below it
Papillary layer
Has the dermal papillae (the projections) and the tactile corpuscles (soft touch receptors, white bulbs)
Reticular layer
The net like structure with sebaceous (blue for oil) and sudoriferous (White/yellow) glands and the lamellar corpuscles for deep pressure (green)
