Integuement of Fishes Flashcards

1
Q

What’s the basic structure of skin?

A

(outside to inside)

  • epidermis
  • dermis

Q

What layers can be present in the epidermis and what do they do?

A
  • inner-most layer: stratum germinativum, makes new cells
  • outside layer: stratum corneum, keratinized for water proofing
  • if middle layer: stratum granulosum, recieves pushed up cells from inside layer
  • may also have glands

Q

What layers and structures are present in the dermis?

A
  • stratum spongiosum, contains pigment cells, chromatophores
  • stratum compactum, contains lots of fibres
  • lots of fibres, nerves, blood vessels, connective tissue

Q

What does the hypodermis consist of and where is it found if present?

A
  • beneath dermis

- contains fat cells for energy storage and insulation

Q

What’s the main function of the stratum corneum in the epidermis?

A
  • protection from dessication

- derivatives include scales (not in fish), feathers, hair, claws
