What are the short acting insulins?
Humalog and other regular insulins (Novalog, Humulin R)
What are the medium acting insulins?
NPH insulin
What are the longer acting insulins?
Lente and Ultralente (there was a note in the slides about rolling these softly in the hand?)
What is 70/30?
70/30 = 70% NPH, 30% rg (Medium acting and short acting mixed together)
Can you mix anything with Lantus?
No.
What is the Dawn phenomenon?
release of growth hormone at night that raises BS (5-6AM) give more insulin at night or give it later around 10 PM
What is the Somogyi phyenomenon?
Morning hyperglycemia from the body’s response to nighttime hypoglycemia, make sure the pt has food at bedtime (Iggy pg 1433)
What is the onset, peak and duration of Humalog?
Onset = Less than 15 min Peak = 30-90 min Duration = 4 hours
What is the onset, peak and duration of other Regular Insulins?
Onset = 30-60 min Peak = 2-4 hours Duration = 5-7 hours
What is the onset, peak and duration of NPH insulin?
Onset = 3-4 hours Peak = 6-12 hours Duration = 18-28
What is the onset, peak and duration of 70/30?
Onset = 15-30 min Peak = 2-3 and 8-12 Duration = 18-24 hours
What is the onset, peak and duration of Glargine (Lantus)?
Onset = 1 hr Peak = 5 hrs Duration = 24 hours
