What is the purpose of an explorer
Feel the surface of teeth, look for holes, grooves, irregular surfaces.
What is the most common explorer?
Shepherds hook
What is the periodontal probe used for
To probe below gums in search of pockets of gum depth.
What is the purpose of a scaler?
To scrape calculi from teeth. Not for sub gingival use.
What are the parts of a scaler?
Tip, face, and cutting edge.
What types of scalers are common?
Sickle (most common), Morris, and U15
What is the purpose of a curette
Used to remove calculus both sub and supragingivally.
Has two sharp edges and a rounded blunt tip
What are the two types of curettes
Universal and Area specific for molars and premolars.
What is the purpose of Calculus Removal Forceps
Quick removal of large calcified debris on teeth.
How are Calculus removal forceps used
Long tip is placed over the crown, and the shorter slight hooked tip is placed under the calculus.
What is the purpose of a dental elevator?
Elevate incisors and pick at the tooth roots.
Elevate a tooth out of socket in the gums or jaw bone.
Dip at gums and separate the teeth from the gingiva.
What are the two different type of dental elevators?
Winged and root tip
