Q

Lost Comms in IMC

A

Step 1: Route - select first able to comply with
- Assigned
- Radar Vectors
- Expected
- As Filed

Step 2: Altitude - select highest
- Minimum IFR altitude

Step 3: Arrival at your clearance limit - if IAF
- yes - decent and approach started as close as possible to EFC or ETA

  • no - if cleared to destination airport
  • over fly airport - leave limit as close to EFC and fly to a fix where approach begins when the aircraft arrives over your clearance limit, start decent as close to ETA
  • if can’t over fly airport - use best judgment on how to proceed to fix start approach as close to ETA - if early hold as depicted lose altitude in hold if needed approach as close to EFC/ETA

Step 4: Submit NASA ARC Form 277(b)

Q

Troubleshoot possible lost comms

A
  • check frequency
  • check ammeter, if required follow appropriate electrical malfunction checklist
  • ensure headset is plugged in
  • check volume
  • check circuit breaker
  • switch radios
  • switch to last frequency you were in contact with ATC on
  • switch headset jack from pilot side to co pilot side or vice versa and use mic button on corresponding yoke

if not resolved

can you continue VFR
- yes - squawk 7600 - continue lost comms under VFR
