Direct method or natural method
when students learn rules of language as they acquire speaking and listening skills
induction
method that focuses on grammatical rules of a target language and recognizing similarities between 1st and 2nd languages. originally intended for reading and translating foreign literature.
grammar-translation method
Oral-based approach to 2nd language learning used by the military. target language taught through repetition.
audio-lingual method (ALM)
approach based on the idea that successful language acquisition comes from the need to communicate real meaning.
communicative approach
Students use authentic texts and realistic scenarios to practice skills they would use outside the classroom.
communicative language teaching (CLT)
method used with beginning language learners to listen and follow spoken commands.
Total physical response (TPR)
teachers remain largely silent and allow students to figure things out on their own
