Hypothesis that all human thought and action is totally controlled by language
Linguistic determinism - Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis strong version.
Hypothesis that language only partially influences human thought and actions.
Linguistic relativism - Sapir-Whorf hypothesis weaker version
Cultures in which the context and relationships among speakers figures importantly. Rules and traditions are important. Heavy reliance on non-verbal communication.
High-Context (collectivist) cultures eg: Japan, China, Middle East and Africa and South America
Cultures in which communication seems loose and informal. Based on facts, background info and evidence,
Low-context (individualistic) cultures. eg: US, Canada, Western Europe.
Cultures where time is valued for punctuality and work and leisure are divided. Linear view of time.
monochromatic
Cultures where flexibility is valued over punctuality. Blurred lines between work and play.

honeymoon stage of acculturation
students excited about new culture
hostility stage of acculturation
students get more comfortable with new culture. Begin to make comparisons to old and view new culture unfavorably.
Humor stage of acculturation
students come to terms with new culture. More accepting with a positive view of new, but can be led to extremes.
Home stage of acculturatoin
students come to accept new culture. Takes a few years.
