institutional aggression Flashcards
dispositional factors- important model
-importation model - those who enter prison with certain characteristics e.g attitudes are more likely to be violent to other inmates,
- meaning its not the institution thats itself making people violent but the characteristics of the people
- younger inmates= difficult adjusting= more likely to have confrontations with other inmates
negative dispositional features leads to increased ag
delisi
studie juveniles in cali, imported MANY negative dispositional features e.g childhood trauma, anger etc.
inmates= more likely to engage in suciideal activities/ sexual misconduct, compared to those who had fewer ndf
situational factors - deprivation model
- aggression = result of stressful conditions of insitution (paterline + Peterson 99’)
- overcrowding = higher fear + frustration = leads to violence/aggresion on other ppl/staff
e.g in uk, overcrowding = forced to share cells = lined to increase in impersonal violence , self harming/suicides
aggression is due to the stress created by the prison itself
- harsh prison conditions = stress= take it out on other inmates as their way of coping
- agression = from other situational factors e.g lock ups, creates frustration as they have less access to goods e.g tvs = so they become more aggressive as a way to cope
prison factors are independent on prisoners personalities
-steiner investigated factors predicting aggression in 512 us prisons
found:
inmate on inmate violence = common in prisons where there was a higher amount of female staff AND aa and hispanic inmates
ao3 strength, importation model,
p- support for it
e- camp and gaes , put half of male inmate ppts in low security and other half in high security
e- no significant difference, suggests that features of prison environment =. less important than characteristics of inmates when it comes to aggression in prisons
l- strong support for dispositional explanation, as random allocation of inmates to different prisons yet still no significant difference
ao3 strength situational explanation
p- supporting research
e- mccorkle et al , found situational factors. eg overcrowding , = increased amount of aggression inmates showed
e- both in on in assault and in and staff assault
l- violence used as form of catharsis, to relieve frustration caused by deprivation in prisons
ao3 strength , used to reduce aggression
p- deprivation model can be used to reduce aggression in prisons
e- e.g if most violence happens in overheated overcrowded prisons, then reducing those factors should reduce aggression
