(8 cards)
dispositional factors- important model
says that inmates bring own traits e.g violence into prison w them
aggression isn’t caused by enviro but prisoners themselves
- younger inmates= difficult adjusting= more likely to have confrontations with other inmates
dispositional factors , research, important model
delisi 2011
studied young offenders in cali , who had neg backgrounds e.g drugnuse truama
- they were more violent , broke more rules
- supports idea that personality and past experiences explain aggression
situational factors - deprivation model
- aggression = result of stressful conditions of insitution (paterline + Peterson 99’)
- overcrowding = higher fear + frustration = leads to violence/aggresion on other ppl/staff
e.g uk prisons= overcrowded, have to share cells , linked to more violence
prison factors are independent on prisoners personalities
-steiner investigated factors predicting aggression in 512 us prisons
found:
inmate on inmate violence = common in prisons where there was a higher amount of female staff AND aa and hispanic inmates
supports dep model , shows HOW the prison is set up , predicts aggression
limitation , high low security
camp and gaes
found no Dif in aggression between low and high security prison
suggests aggression doesn’t come from institution but FROM PPL
strength , real world ap
dep model
help understand how prison conditions affect ppl
led to improvements = reduced violence
limitation , combo
too simple , dont explain all cases
combo of both = better explanation
strength , research
mccorkle
suitaitonal variables e.g overcrowding increased amount of aggression shown
both in and in and in and staff assault
violence= form of catharsis , relieve frustration caused by prisons
