de individualisation Flashcards
de individualisation
zimbardo
- ppl lose personal identity/ responsibility for own behaviour when they join crowds
crowds= responsibility shard = so no longer feel personally responsible as its shared amongst everyone else
anonymity
being unrecognizable diminishes personal consequence as fear of punishment .
increase anonymity by = be apart of a large group, darkness/ uniform
anonymity = reduces inner restraints = increases behaviours that are usually inhibited
people usually stop themselves from acting aggressively because social norms are against their behaviour and bc they’re easily identifiable
zimbardo
- de individualised ppts = more severe shocks on learner than ppts who were identifiable
- deindivualised = bulky lab coats, no name tag,
individualised = normal clothes, had name tags, were introduced to each other
shows that-
anonymity = increases aggression
dodd
- asked psych students ‘if u could do anything humanely possible with complete reassurance that you wouldn’t be detected// held responsible what would u do’
- 36% of responses involved anti social behaviour
9% were prosocial
shows link between anonymity and aggressive behaviour
ao3 Dodd strength
p- baiting crowd is a real world example of de individualisation
e- mann, analysed 21 times of suicide leaps, found in 10 in 21 cases where a crowd had gathered, baiting had occurred
e- baiting usually happened at night, where crowd was large, some distance from the jumper
l- features likely to happen in de individualised state, shows that de individualisation does happen in real world
ao3 strength chat rooms
p- more support for de indiv
e- Douglas and McCarty , found strong correlation= from anonymity + posting threatening messages in chat rooms
e- most aggressive messages = sent by ppl who hid real identities
l- link beween anonymity/deindivialisation and aggressive behaviour
ao3 negative contradicting evidence
p- contradicting evidence
e- Gergen et al , strangers put in dark room started kissing + touching each other
e- repeated , ppts told that they would be face to face with each other, kissing reduced
l- despite anonymity = creating conditions for de indivualsation , no aggression was recorded
ao3 support war/ anthropological
p- anthropological support for it
e- Watson , looked at extent which warriors in 23 societies changed their appearance before going to war and the extent which they killed/ tortured victims
e- found that warriors who changed their appearance the most= most destructive towards victims compared to those who didnt change appearance
l- supports idea that = anonymity inducing a de induvalisaed state = leads to aggression
