gang members were 10 times more likely to commit murder and 3 times more likely to assault someone in public than non-gang members of a similar age and background

trainee nurses were more likely to be assaulted that experienced nurses and the length of service was a significant factor as less experienced officers were more likely to be assaulted
What did irwin and cressey find?
prisoners import their social histories as traits into prison which influences their adaption in the prison. The normative systems they develop outside of prison and imported into prison with them
what is the deprivation model?
the deprivation model argues prisoner aggression is due to the stressful conditions of the Instituion itself. These include crowding, which increases fear and frustration and staff experience
what are the pains of imprisonment?
loss of liberty, loss of autonomy, loss of security
what did Delisi et al say?
he said that gang member are no more likely than other members to engage in prison violence. This may be because gang member tend to be isolated from the population and therefore have less opportunities to be violent

prisoner aggression is to the deprivations in prison such as loss of liberty, loss of autonomy and loss of security

what is an evaluation point of dehumanisation?
there have been real life events to support dehumanisation such as the holocaust and Rwandan genocide
what did milgram claim?
the holocaust was due to the situational pressures put upon the nazi soldiers in obeying higher authority. They killed innocent people because they were told to so by a higher authority
what happened in the Rwandan genocide?
the Hutu controlled the hate radio stations and they encouraged the Hutu listeners to murder their Tutsi neighbours. They referred to the Tutsis as ‘cockroaches’
what is dehumanisation?
humans have moral inhibitions not to kill people however that can change when the target group is dehumanised and therefore is not worthy of moral consideration and are seen as worthless animals
what did harer and steffeinsmier find?
they found they black inmates had significantly higher rates in prison violence however had lower rates in alcohol-use as drug-use violence than white inmates
what is a strength of the inportation model?
it can explain individual factors such as age, education level and race
what is a strength of both the deindividuation and inportation model?
the deprivation model is better at explaining violence against other staff where as the inportation model is better at explaining violence against other inmates
