- Mr Birling- ‘A man has to mind his own business and look after himself and his own’
.This sums up capitalism to a tee
.their is no choice here, birling doesnt say a man could he says a man has to. has to mind his own business, **business has two meanings **business can mean your work like the business you run.Business can also mean what you get up to, what you keep to yourself (personal), this is irony because all there ‘business’ gets exposed in this play because they all stick there noses onto each others ‘business’ there all jump into eva smiths life in one shape or form.
.the order of the words in the quote is significant because its starts with business, you, and then other people, and that sums up capitalism. Capatalism is the belief that the two things most important are business (wealth, money)and then yourself this creates an society where peple are selfish and envious were people only care about their own desires.
Sheila- ‘But these girls aren’t cheap labour these girls are people’
.This shows the battle between capatalism (cheap labour) and socialism (these girls are people)
.Mr** Birling treats eva smith like an worker, Gereld treats her like an boss will use an worker but in an sexual way same as eric,** this shows what capatalism does to an person, capatalism changes the way people thinks so people think as other people as workers so if i can’t get anything out of you you might aswell go now.
**this quote is good to **show how capatalism has dehumanized people. you can also use this quote to show how Birling views his daughters, when he finds out Gerald had an affair he almost rather than telling gerald of he tells sheila kinda calm down your overreacting** because at that time his daughter is not an person to him his daughter is an commodity his daughter is cheap labour that he’s selling to gerald because its an business deal their marrige is an business deal because by sheila marring gerald it raises all of they statues.**
‘If we were all responsible for everything that happened to everybody we’d had anything to do with, it would be very awkward, wouldn,t it?’
long quote so just pick what you need for your paragraph.
.you want to link this quote to the idea of responsibility wiping they hand clean
.this quote links to the idea of the berlin family wiping away their hands away not just from responsibility of eva smith but the whole notion of responsiblity they saying were not responsible for anything they say if we were responsible for everything that happend it would be awkward it would’nt be normal so they are wiping they hand clean of this responisbility, but its this ideology that backstabbes them because they’re they dont expect reponsiblity , they treat people as they were objects and therfore by the end of act 2 and the start of act 3 eveything becomes arkward, **sheila is an hot mess because she can,t belive what she has done, gerald has gone for an walk because it was getting to hard for him, mrs birling has became crazy and blames everything on eric, ecric comes out saying he had an affair and had been stealing from his dad and mr birling doen’t know what to do he is even offering money to the inspector by act 3 its become super arkward. what happend to the strong, cofident man now saying i will give thousand and thousands. Mr Birling and Mrs Birling and thse capatalists basically sum up their fate in this quote. carry on doing what you are doing because eventully life will become every awkward for you.**
linking to the idea of responsiblilty
Mrs Birling- ‘‘First, the girl herself. … Secondly, i blame the young man who was the father of the child …He should be made an example of’’
.This quote is** dramatic irony because later she will find out the father is eric,** then she will say oh my god if only i knew, if only i knew this phrase is important because you can link this quote to morality. she basically said good is dependent upon who does it and bad is dependent on who does it , she says the father of the child should be blamed but when she finds out its eric somehow its not bad anymore, therfore here morality she does not have any morality, morality is what is good or bad.
so its the idea that Mrs Birling and all the other capatalists have no fixed morality .

Eric- ‘’ i wasn’t in love with her or anything - but i liked her - she was pretty and a good sport.’’
.this quote patriachy is perfect because this is how all the men viewed the woman as good sports. what do you do in sport you play games and they is an winner and an loser and you can’t play an game forever sooner or later it’s gonna end and this exactly how Gerald and Eric treated eva as good sport they use her they literally use her,use her for sex use her for an good time and the moment she’s fulfilled her purpose they kinda move on. whenther you agree or not whenever you say grald loved her, eric gave her money at the end of the day they treat her like an game. This quotes reflect how they can treat her like an game because number 1 they men so they naturally have more power over women in 1912 england, number 2 they are rich men super rich so they can literally do whatever they want. The point is that being an man an very rich man comes with privilege this is what eric says he say’s it openly not even hiding it

Inspector- ‘‘We are members of one body. We are reponsible for each other’‘(metaphor)
this quote goes against everthing Mr Birling,Gerald and Mrs Birling stand for. (capatalism)
.this quote tells us we are all a community and we should stick up for each other
links to socialism, responsiblility, describe the character of the sayer
sheila -‘‘the point is you don’t seem to have learnt anything’’
quote shows sheilas change
.sheila is very direct
.this quote shows the power of socialism and shows how socialism can ture an weak , shy innocent person (sheila) into an person with beilefs, morality and an voice
Inspector- ‘‘One Eva Smith has gone…but there are millions…of Eva Smiths.. all intertwined with our lives…if men will not learn that lesson, then they will be taught it in fire blood and anguish’’
.you can link fire, blood, anguish to hellfire or ww1 depending on the question.
.the berlin family actully commits no crime only moral crimes which is not punishible under law
.this quote can be used for the idea when the inspector says look based upon the current system in charge which is capatalism the ruling system may let you guys get away with your moral crimes because unfortunatley moral crimes are not illegal crimes but if you don’t fix up your bad moral ways turmoil awaits,ww1 awaits, hell fire awaits.
Mrs Birling -‘‘When you’re married, you’ll realise that men with important work to do sometimes have to spend all their time and energy on their business.’’
quote links to gender
Mrs Birling knows her role so well shes knows what to do as an women in a patriachal society in 1912 england and she raises her daughter in the same way that you will also follow and do as i say .
'’Clothes mean something quite different to a woman’’
this quote is perfect when looking at how men viewed woman how women were viewed in society and its the idea that men were powerful therefore men were judged upon their wealth as that was the closest link to masculinity however women were judged primarily upon what you saw how you looked and this what dictated how you were trated afterwards it’s almost implying that the more dressed you are the more respect you have the more skin you show the less respect you have the nicer your clothers more respect you have the less niser your clothes the less respect you have. its
puts a condition on love it puts an condition on how people treat one anouther especially how the men treated the women.
