what is a proper noun?
proper nouns are the names of specific people or places e.g Katie, Harry, Liverpool, England
concrete noun?
A thing that can be touched. tasted, herd, seen or smelt. The opposite of a abstract noun
e.g Dog, building,tree,fire and water
pronoun?
A word used to replace a noun. we use pronouns so we don’t need to repeat the same nouns over and over again
e.g you,he,she,me,we,i,they
common noun?
common nouns are places things feelings or ideas
e.g Home,school,book,computer,trees,telvision
collective nouns?
a group of noun
e.g team,army,family,group,audience
abstract noun?
an idea or concept-something that you cannot actully see, touch, hear,smell or taste the opposite of a concrete noun
e.g love,anger,hatered,happiness,truth,freedom
what is a verb?
An action- a doing word
e.g Sing,walk,dance
dynamic verb?
A verb which is physically moing or changing
e.g eat, walk, learn,grow, sleep,talk,run,read
stative verb?
a verb wich does not physically move- you cannot see, feel,hear,taste or smell
e.g love,hate,prefer,doubt,seem
imperative verb?
verbs whch give orders- bossy verbs
e.g stop,bring,give
what is a main clause?
a clause that contains a subject,verb and an object.
Main clauses make sense on their own.
e.g i like bananas
compound sentence?
a compound sentence is formed when you join two main clauses with a connective.
e.g the sand was rought on my skin BUT the sun was gleaming brilliantly of the water
simple sentence?
a simple sentence has one clause. it only has a verb and a subject.
e.g she picked up the brown box
subordinate clause?
is one that relies on a main clause to make sense- it contains a subject and a verb. and adds extra informaton to the sentence. it needs to be atached to a main clause because it cannot make sense on its own
e.g After she noticed it was missing…(What happend?)
complex sentence?
a complex sentence is formed when you join a main clause and a subordinate clause with a connective.
some connectivs include:when,if,because,although.
e.g while the wind blew. people stayed indoors
monosyllabic words?
words that consist of one syllable
e.g yes,no,cat,dog,foo
what is a idiom?
A metaphorical phrase which has a specific, well-known meaning, but the meaning does not explicitly link to the meanings of the individual words.
e.g A penny for your thoughts
What is an adverbial phrase?
an adverbial phrase is simply two or more words that act as an adverb. it can modify a verb,adverb or adjective and can tell ‘‘how’’, ‘‘where’’.’‘why’’. or ‘‘when’’
e.g we strolled through the garden.
What is cliche?
a phrase or opinion that is overused and portrays a lack of original thought.
e.g. Frightened to death
what is Anaphora?
is the repetition of a word or phrase at the beginning of a series for phrases or sententences
ellpsis?
a situation in which words are left out of a sentence but the sentence can still be understood. this may be done to create tension. the symbol is e.g Bang … silence
