Act one-one spring evening in 1912
Billing family are all having dinner whilst celebrating Sheilas engagement to Gerald
Arthur (Mr birling) gives a speech to Eric and Gerald about business
The inspector arrives giving a introduction to Eva smith who committed sucide by drinking disinfectant
Act one key features?
Sheila is suspecting that Gerald had lost interest in her last summer
Mr billing gives a iconic speech about how every man should look after themselves
After questioning it appears Mr billing confuses his part that he had sacked Eva smith from his factory after striking protest against low wages
Sheila confesses her part when in a store asks Eva smith specifically to be sacked a year ago
The inspector says that Eva smith changed her name to daisy Renton. Gerald appears shocked and leaves
Act two-everyone’s tangled up in the inspectors investigation
Key features
Gerald confesses he spent last summer with daisy Renton as his mistress (linking Sheila thoughts that Gerald lost interest in her)
Sheila returns her ring and Gerald leaves
The inspector gets Sybil (mrs birling) to confess her part in her persuading a women’s charity organisation to reject a pregnant eva/daisys appeal for help, which therefore blames the father of Eva/daisy child for her death
Sheila has a guess that the father of the child is Eric
Act 3-Eric bring shame to the family
When Eric returns he already has a idea that the inspector lead everyone to the conclusion that he’s the father of Eva/daisys unborn child
He describes how he met Eva smith at a bar and drunkenly forced her to have sex, afterwards leading to her pregnancy and him stealing money from his fathers office (mr birling) to support her
Eva/daisy had rejected the stolen money and turned to mrs birlings charity for help Eric puts a partial blame on mrs birling murdering her own grandchild by refusing to give her charity help
The inspector does his final speech by reminding all the birlings that we are all responsible for one another and gives a warning that if unless everyone learns to look after each other, the lesson will have to be learnt after with great suffering
Act three-the final twist
Gerald returns having spoken to a officer who doesn’t recognise the name goole-inspector, mr birling calls the station to confirm that there is no inspector goole
Gerald calls the hospital to find no one committed suicide. The most selfish characters (mr birling mrs birling and Gerald) decide it was all a big hoax and they can relax
Sheila and Eric argue that they are still guilty of treating someone badly
The phone rings a young woman has been found dead after consuming disinfectant, and the police are sending a inspector to question the family
