rough and thick, lusterless, dim colour, loss of transparency:

striped (horizontal or vertical; too obvious) nails:

trauma, or tinea (fungal infection)
brittle, chipped nails:
blood deficiency w/ wind, trauma, or tinea (fungal infection)
hook shaped nails:
qi and blood stagnation,
or wind painful obstruction
spoon shaped nails:
qi and blood stagnation, malnutrition, SP deficiency, or bi (chronic painful obstruction)
ridges on nails:
KD yin deficiency w/ LR yang rising,
or qi and blood deficiency
horizontal and vertical stripes together on nails:
dry heat attacking LU,
LR qi stagnation,
or Qi deficiency with blood stagnation
twisted and bent nails:
LR qi deficiency (qi stagnation with SP Qi deficiency),
or LR Blood deficiency
flat shaped nails (pediatric cases):
qi and blood circulation disorder due to sucking or biting fingers
dark red nails/bed:
exhuberant heat
crimson nails/bed:
yin deficiency
