What is SW’s lone working procedure?
- Inform secretary where I am going, what time and who I am meeting
- Inform secretary what time I am expected back at the office or if I am going home
- Only inspect between 9-4.30 - this allows time should the surveyor call with a problem to investigate before the office closes at 5.15
Talk me through a typical property inspection
- Organise inspection and inquire about PPE
- Desktop research
- Inform secretary of the inspection details
- On-site: external site and property first. Assessing roof down
- Internally: ceiling down
- Inspect local area
- Upload my notes digitally and save within file
Why do you carry out desktop research before inspecting?
Helps understand the nature of the property. Perhaps boundary discrepancies which I can clarify while on site.

How can you tell the difference between a solid brick wall and a cavity wall?
Externally, the presence of headers would be apparent on a solid brick wall, and not a cavity wall.
