Why are people that live within a place more likely to oppose developments within their local area than those from the outside?
People have a stronger relationship with the places that they are familiar with.
What term can be applied to the opposition of developments?
NIMBY
INSIDERS
- They develop a sense of place through their everyday experiences in familiar settings.
- Daily rhythms +Shared experiences is crucial in developing a sense of place for insiders
OUTSIDERS
- The sense of place Is more vague and abstract
- Their view is often about The discovery of a place as well as their personal view of entering a landscape and learning about that place.
- They can sometimes feel out of place
Give an example of someone who may feel “in place” and someone who may feel out of place.
A business woman may feel “in place” in Canary Wharf whilst a homeless person may feel out of place.
Why do ethnic minorities living in Britain feel excluded from rural areas?
They may not feel welcomed by the British people.
What has national propaganda turned the countryside into?
It has turned it into symbol of an ideal Britain.
Where do ethnic minorities tend to live?
They tend to live in urban areas which can be seen as undesirable.
Give an example of a place that might have insiders and outsiders
A church
- Insides = people that go to church services regularly
- Outsiders = people who may only visit occasionally e.g for a wedding
