What are the 3 different aspects of place?
Location Locale Sense of place.
What is meant by location?
This is where the area is on a map.
What is locale?
This is a place where something happens, or is set, or that had particular events associated with it, causing different behaviours. It takes into account the effect that people have on their setting. It is shaped by the people, cultures and customs within it.
What is meant by sense of place?
- This is the subjective or emotional attachment a person has to a place. - people can develop a sense of place through knowledge and experience of a particular area. - It is not always the same, , it may be completely different when looked at from another’s perspective.
Why do people sometimes have different perceptions of the same place?
This could be because they have different experiences of the place and may have visited at different times.
Why can different place-meanings that people attach to an area create conflict?
If people have contrasting views of a place, they may want it to be treated differently which could create conflict.
What are the 3 different approaches to place?
Descriptive Social constructive Phenomenological
What is the descriptive approach to place?
This is the idea that the world is a set of places and each place and be studied and is distinct. - Can be studied through a description of its physical and human characteristics
What does the social constructive approach see place as?
This sees place as a product of a particular set of social processes occurring at a particular time.
What is an example of a social constructive approach?
Trafalgar Square
What was Trafalgar Square built to commemorate?
It was built to commemorate the British naval victory in the 1800s.
What could Trafalgar Square be understood to be as?
It could be understood to be as a place of empire and colonialism.
What is the phenomenological approach
- Places are defined through human experiences. It is the connection between place and person that transforms unknown spaces into familiar places
What is the phenomenological approach interested + not interested in?
- This is interested in how a particular person experiences place, recognising a highly personal relationship and person. - Not interested in The unique characteristics of a place or why it was constructed.
What does the term “topophilia” describe?
The affective bond between people and place.
