Insect Growth and Development Flashcards
What is molting?
Process of periodically shedding / renewing cuticle… (‘ecdysis’)
What are the three steps of molting and how are they different?
- Apolysis - cuticle separates from epidermis, epidermal cells divide, endocuticle reabsorbed.
- Ecdysis - ‘shedding skin’, old cuticle breaks, insect emerges.
- Sclerotization - rehardening, bursicon hormone
What is shed during a molt?
Cuticle is shed during molt.
What is the shed skin of an insect called?
Exuvia
What color are most insects when they emerge from a molt?
White (haven’t sclerotized yet)
What process is used to change color and harden the exoskeleton?
Polyphenols… “tanning” in taxidermy, controlled by bursicon hormone.
What is the period between molts called?
Instars
What two hormones control molting?
Which one is called the “molting hormone”?
Juvenile hormone (JH) and ecdysone.
Ecdysone is known as “molting hormone”.
If JH is low, then…
… the insect would be an adult following the next molt.
If JH is high, then…
… the insect would be immature following the next molt.
What is voltinism?
Number of generations of an organism in a year.
What is the difference between univoltine and multivoltine?
Univoltine - 1 per year (Japanese beetles)
Multivoltine - > 1 per year (aphids, chinch)
Define diapause.
Hormonally controlled, physiological condition that controls dormancy.
What is a diapause in cold weather?
Overwintering
What is a diapause in warm weather?
Aestivation
