General Entomology Flashcards
Why are insects successful?
- exoskeleton
- ability to fly
- short generation time
- small size
- reprodutive capacity
What is an exoskeleton?
Outer ‘shell’ of insect.
Provides structure, support, protection:
- keeps insect from drying out
- base for attachment of muscles
What are the parts of the exoskeleton and what are they made of?
- Epicuticle
- Exocuticle
- Endocuticle
- Epidermis
Epicuticle: outer layer, non-cellular, secreted by epidermis… shed or reabsorbed during molt. Made from chitin (complex polysaccharide), protein (sclerotin), quinones, lipids, and wax
Epidermis: cellular, inner layer
How can arthropods perceive their environment from inside a hard shell?
External sensory structures, sensory hairs
How can insects benefit from being cold blooded? Give an example.
Thermoregulation - shortens generation time.
Ant mounds are solar collectors… immatures are up top to speed up development.
What are positive influences of insects on humanity?
- products - silk, honey, wax, shellac
- services - pollination, decomposition, biocontrol
- food - termites, catepillars, honeybees
- research tools - fruit flies
What are negative influences of insects on humanity?
- vectors - plant / animal disease
- contamination of food
- direct crop loss - feeding on products
- indirect crop loss - defoliation of plants
- impant of human possessions
What percent of insects are pests?
Less than 1%!
What are the seven ways that an insect can become classified as a pest?
- Entry into new regions - Japanese beetle (no natural enemies)
- Shifts in host-plant preference - apple maggot fly (hawthorn -> apples)
- Changes in biology / genetics of host - dogwood (understory, full sun -> borer damage)
- Change in cultivation - monocultures (CO potato beetle)
- Changes in management / technology - insectide resistance, no till -> more OW
- Changes in consumer preference
- Changes in disease competence - Asian citrus psyllid (citrus greening)
Is the classification of ‘pest’ primarily economic or ecological in nature?
Economic, based on:
- market value
- crop susceptibility
- environmental factors
