What are inputs?
When water is introduced/put into the system
What are stores?
Occur when water’s kept within the system and not moved through it.
What are transfers/flows?
Where water is moved from one place to another.
What are outputs?
Occur in the river system. When water is carried through the river to the sea.
What is a Source?
The point at which a river begins.
What is the Mouth of the River?
Where the river ends.
What are tributaries?
Smaller rivers that lead off of the bigger ones.
What is a confluence?
The place where a tributary joins the main/bigger river.
What is a Drainage Basin?
The area where water from rain or snow drains downhill into the river, lake or sea.
What is a water shed?
The boundary of a drainage basin.
What is the Channel?
Where the main river flows.
What are the changes in river characteristics?
The river can be divided into 3 sections: upper course, middle course and lower course. Vertical erosion is more dominant near the source and lateral erosion is more dominant near the mouth.
