inputs, outputs and transfers Flashcards
1
Q
inputs
A
added across the whole glacier, but mainly concentrated towards the head in the zone of accumulation
2
Q
outputs
A
lost across the whole glacier, mainly concentrated towards the snout in the zone of ablation
3
Q
inputs causing accumulation
A
- wind blown snow
- precipitation
- avalanche and rock debris
solar energy
4
Q
outputs causing ablation
A
- meltwater
- wind blown snow
- sublimation
- calving
5
Q
transfers of mass
A
excess mass from the zone of accumulation is transferred to the zone of ablation due to gravity which causes the glacier to deform and flow
6
Q
ice forms from snow in zone of accumulation
A
firn snow is produced, this percolates in summer but when it refreezes it becomes increasingly dense. after a number of years most of the air is squeezed out and ice is formed
