causes of long term climate change (quaternary ice age) Flashcards
the quaternary
a geological period representing the last 2 million years of earths history. characterised by ice house conditions
ice house
permanent ice in polar regions
holocene
11,500 years before present to present, interglacial period
devensian
80,000 ybp to 11,500 ybp, glacial period
ipswichian
100,000 ybp to 80,000 ybp, interglacial period
wolstonian
140,000 ybp to 100,000 ybp, glacial period
hoxnian
140,000 ybp to 180,000 ybp, interglacial period
milankovitch cycle
long term cyclical changes between glacial and intergalcial periods are to do with the changes in earths orbit around the sun, leads to variation in the intensity of insolation
present day earth orbit
current orbit is 365 1/4 days. axis is tilted towards the sun at 23.5 which causes seasonal variations due to where the sun is overhead in the tropic of cancer (23.5 N) and capricorn (23.5 S)
