input devices (touchscreen only) Flashcards
how do resistive touchscreens work
1- they use multiple layers of material that transmits electric current
2- when top layer touches lower layer, the current changes and the location of where the screen was pressed is found
advantages of resistive touchscreens
cheap to make
can be used when wearing a glove
disadvantages of resistive touchscreens
poor in sunlight
easily scratched
doesn’t allow multi-touch
how do capacitive touchscreens work
they have conductive layers
when the top layer is touched, the electric current changes
microprocessor works out the coordinates where the screen was touched
advantages of capacitive touchscreens
good visibility in sunlight
very durable
allows multi-touch
disadvantages of capacitive touchscreens
can only use bare fingers or a conductive stylus
how do infrared touchscreens work
it detects heat or uses infra-red sensors to detect touch
microprocessor works out where the screen was touched
advantages of infrared touchscreens
can use bare hands, gloved hands or a stylus
good screen durability
allows multi-touch
disadvantages of infrared touchscreens
relatively expensive
heat-sensitive systems only allow bare hands to be used
