Inorganic ions (3.1.8) Flashcards
where are inorganic ions found?
in solution in the cytoplasm and body fluids of organisms (some in high concentrations, others in very low concentrations)
what is the main role of iron ions?
they are a component of haemoglobin so are involved in transporting oxygen
what is the main role of phosphate ions?
they are components of DNA and ATP
what is the main role of hydrogen ions?
they determine the pH of solutions and therefore the functioning of enzymes
what is the main role of sodium ions?
they are involved in the co-transport of glucose and amino acids
how do you calculate the pH of a solution using its hydrogen ion concentration?
pH = -log10[H+]
how do you calculate the hydrogen ion concentration of a solution using its pH?
H+ = 10^-pH
