Inorganic ions Flashcards
1
Q
What are inorganic ions?
A
- an ion that doesn’t contain carbon
- ions that occur in solution in the cytoplasm and body fluids of organisms, some in high concentrations and others in very low concentrations (depends on its role)
- Each has a specific role depending on its properties
- Positive = cation
- negative = anion
2
Q
Hydrogen ions?
A
Lower the pH of solutions and impact enzyme function and haemoglobin function/ role in chemiosmosis
3
Q
Iron ions
A
A component of haemoglobin in the transport of oxygen
4
Q
Sodium ions
A
Involved in the Co transport of glucose and amino acids in absorption. Or enrol in generating action potentials
5
Q
Phosphate ions
A
A component of DNA (forms phosphodiester bonds with deoxyribose) and ATP (makes ADP more reactive)
