Inorganic Ions Flashcards
What are ions?
An ion is an atom that has an electric charge.
What are inorganic ions?
An inorganic ion is one which doesn’t contain carbon. An ions role is determined whether it is found in high or low concentrations.
Where do inorganic ions occurs ?
In solution in the cytoplasm of cells and in the body fluids of organisms
Iron ions
Iron ions are present in haemoglobin which is a large protein that carried oxygen around the body in the red blood cells. Iron ions bind to the oxygen.
Hydrogen ions
pH is calculated based on the concentration of hydrogen ions in the environment. The more H+ ions the more acidic the environment and also the functioning of enzymes.
Sodium ions
Glucose and amino acids need help crossing cell membranes so alongside sodium ions they can be transported. This is known as co transport
Phosphate ions
Phosphate ions join together to make phosphate groups.
DNA, RNA, and ATP contain phosphate groups. It’s the bonds between phosphate groups that store energy in ATP.
The phosphate groups in DNA and RNA allow nucleotides to join up to form the polynucleotides.
