Inorganic Chemistry Definitions Flashcards
Oil?
Mixture of compounds called hydrocarbon
Hydrocarbon?
Compound of carbon and hydrogen only
Unsaturated?
contains a carbon-carbon multiple bond.
Saturated?
contains only single bonds.
Aromatic?
contains a benzene ring of carbon atoms
Aliphatic?
contains straight or branched carbon chains or rings (but not benzene rings)
Empirical formula?
Simplest ratio of atoms of each element in a compound
Molecular formula?
Actual number of atoms of each element in a compound
Homologous series?
A series of organic compounds with the same functional group, but with each successive member differing by CH2 each time.
Functional group?
The part of the organic molecule responsible for its reactions
Structural isomerism?
Molecules with the same molecular formula but different displayed formula
Fish hook arrow?
movement of a single e-
Curly arrow?
Movement of a pair of e-
Stereoisomerism?
Have the same structural formula but different arrangements in space
Electrophile?
e- pair acceptor
