Inorganic AS definitions Flashcards
Electronegativity
The power of an atom to attract the pair of electrons in a covalent bond.
Barium meal
Barium sulfate is used in barium meals. It can be ingested to show blockages and help Doctors diagnose issues in the intestines.
Flue gases
The gases emitted from chimneys and industrial exhausts
Wet scrubbing
A process used to remove acidic sulfur dioxide from flue gases by reacting the gases with an alkali.
Sparingly soluble
Compounds which have very low solubilities. E.g Magnesium hydroxide
Displacement
A chemical reaction in which one more reactive element replaces another less reactive element in a compound.
Oxidising ability
The ability to act as an oxidising agent (electron acceptors)
Reducing ability
The ability to act as a reducing agent (electron donors)
