inorganic Flashcards
thermal decomposition
Thermal decomposition is the breaking down of a compound using heat.
charge density
Charge density is a measure of charge over size of ion (so a small, highly charged ion would have a high charge density)
polarising power
Polarising power is the ability of a cation to polarise an anion. More charge dense cations have greater polarising power.
polarisability
Polarisability is how much an anion is able to be polarised by a cation. Larger, more negatively charged ions are more polarisable (eg. As3- would be more polarisable than F-).
electronegativity
Electronegativity is the ability of an element to attract a pair of electrons in a covalent bond.
displacement reaction
A displacement reaction is one in which a more reactive element displaces a less reactive element from a compound (swapping places with it).
precipitate
A precipitate is a solid formed from the reaction between two solutions.
