Inorganic Flashcards
How are elements arranged in the periodic table
Elements are arranged to their proton number
What is periodicity
The study of trends within the periodic table
What is the trend in ionisation energy along a period and why
Along -> increases as the electrons are held stronger to the opposite attractions
What is the trend in ionisation energy going down a group and why
Decreases as the nuclear attraction decreases and shielding increases
Why does the first IE decrease on group 3?
Outter electron is in a P orbital which has higher energy than S orbitals so less energy is needed to remove a E
Why does the first IE decrease on group 6?
The electrons pair up in the same p orbital and create repulsion between the paired electrons
What happens to the IE as you go down a group
Decreases as the electron shielding increases as the atomic radius increases and creates a weaker force between the Electrons and protons meaning less energy is needed to remove them
How Does reactivity between water and group 2 as you go down the group?
Increases
What is a flue gas?
Gases produced by power station that harm the environment
Trend in bp as u go down group 7?
Increases as size of atom increases, stronger VDW
Trend in electronegativity as you go down group 7?
Decreases as there is more shells which has a greater atomic radius meaning lower attraction between nucleus and covalent bond
