Q

IL-1

A

Produced by macrophages, monocytes, dendritic cells
Critical for inflammatory response against infection
Inc expression of adhesion molecules
Re-set the hypothalamus thermoregulatory centre (fever) ie. endogenous pyrogen
Regulates haemoatopoeisis
Stimulates IL-6 production

Q

TNF

A
= tumur necrosis factor
Transmembrane protein, can be cleaved and released to act as cytokine
Acts on TNFR-I and -II receptors
Local and systemic effects
- activates endothelium
- inc vascular permeability
- fever
- mobilisation of metabolites
- shock

Q

Acute phase response

A
Induced by 'monotones": TNF, IL-1, IL-6
Act on liver to release specific proteins to
- fight infection
- prevent tissue destruction
- promote tissue healing

NK cells

A

Part of innate immune system
Large granular lymphocytes

Kill virally infected cells
Kill tumour cells
Release cytokines to activate adaptive immune system
Major cell of pregnant uterus
